FOOTBALL.

SENIOR CUP.

Waib.au v. Waitohi.

It seemed like old times to see the crowd that went down to Picton to witness the above match, and it showed that football haa still a warm corner ia the hearts of many. Great interest was taken in the match as all competing teams were running about equal. Both clubs put their strongest teams out, aud the best match of the season was the result. The passing of the Wairau backs at times was really good, and at at intervals also that of Clark, Love and Reid for the seasiders was excellent. Reid's defence was very good, and after making a' brilliant attempt at a pot, he scored for the Picton boys after a flue run. This was the only score they obtained. The first spell ended in favor of the Wairaus by three points, a try gained by Morrison, although it was through Clouston's fine following up that it was obtained. On resuming off-side play on the part of the Waitohi forwards gave the Wairaus a free kick, and Terrill from hilf-way kicked a magnificent goal. • Almost as soon as play started, Hegglun passed to Terrill, who scored, and duly registered another goal. Disaster followed disaster for the Picton boys. Terrill converted another free kick, and Mclher followed this up soon after by scoring another try, Terrill again making the major points. Again play had not been resumed ten minutes before Burke, who had been playing a hard, honest game all through, broke through the yellows and scored yet another try. Terrill again converted. The whistle blew soon after, leaving the followers of the reds jubilant at the big victory of 24 to three. Although there is such a margin between the scores, it does not show the reliable positions of the teams. No doubt the brilliant place-kicking of Terrill accounts fo? the difference. In fact it seems like a ; New Zealand record, that from five kicks he should kick five goals. The Wairaus as a team could not bo individualised, ras each man played for his club. For the Waitphis, Clark, as usual, although playing an uphill game, shone brilliantly, Love, Reid, Lawson and McMann backing him up well. The forwards, however, were weak, but no doubt they will improve with tuition.

Mr Frank Dodson refereed, and as usual gave satisfaction.

This game concludes the second round of the cup, and the position c f the teams is: Wairaus 2f points, Awaruas 2 points, Waitohis \\ points.

The match between the Awarua and Wairau teams in the final round will be looked forward to with keen interest} and a good game should result. The Nelson Union has written to the local Union stating they wish their senior representative team to play here on Wednesday, 23rd inst.
