Mr Barton, Federal Premier, responding to the toast of " The Colonies," at the North Staffordshire Chamber of Commerce luncheon at Stoke, said that a vast number of colonials regard fiscal policies as expedients. How far expediency would influence him in the Imperial Conference was matter of speculation even even unto himself. English policy ought to be directed to the cheapening of steam and telegraphic mail transit between the (Motherland and the colonies. The speaker emphasised the illimitable resources in the way of production and trade of the Commonwealth.
Mr Seddon said the colonies had no desire to raise the fiscal question, and so place parties in the Motherland in antagonism on that issue. They desired, rather, to help in binding the Empire together by subsidies to steamers carrying British goods, which would involve no sacrifice of principle either by free traders or protectionist s.
