A MOTHER'S SELF-SACRI-FICE.
A pathetic instance of a mother's devotion comes to light in the story of an accident on the Central London Railway on May 7th.
The accident happened about eleven o'clock in the morning at the Tottenham Court Road Station of the " Tube." Mrs Peacock, the wife of a postman, with her little by in her arms, was standing close to the edge of the platform waiting for a city train.
As the train came along she seemed to be seized with a faintness, and swayed to and fro. She made an effort to recover herself without avail, and then, when the train was not more than 20 feet away, she fell forward on to the line.
There was still time for her to save herself by hastily squeezing through between the metals into the hollow space beneath, but the child was clinging to her, and she made a desperate attempt to save him.
Lying prone on the metals she pushed him hurriedly into the channel beneath the line. She had hardly done so when the engine was upon her. She was shockingly injured about the legs, and was conveyed to the Middlesex Hospital. It is feared that she will pay for her heroic action with her life.
