RAILWAY EXTENSION.
. Ashburton, June 21. A meeting of settlers was held at Mayfield last night to discuss the question of extending the railway to that district. There was a large attendance, and the following resolution was unanimously passed :—" That this meeting of settlers in and around the Mayfield district is unanimously of opinion that the districb should be connected with the railway system of the colony, and respectfully requests the Government to send an engineer to report on the routes suggested, viz.: (a) Valetta to Mayfield direct; (b) Westerfield to Cavendish via the north bank of the Hinds River ; (c) We9terfield to Cavendish via Mayfield and south branch of the Hinds River; (d) Westerfield to Mayfield, thence continued across the Upper Rangitata Plain to Rangitata River bank." Mr John McLauehlan, M.H.R., was present, and gave some information regarding the cost and answered questions.
