SHIPPING SUBSIDIES.
LORD BRASSEY'S VIEWS.
Press Association. Electric Telegraph, Copyright.
London, June 20.
Lord Brassey, giving evidence before the Shipping Subsidies Committee of the House of Commons, said he did not favor subsidies being paid with the object of increasing the profits of shipowners, but thought them desirable for the public advantage.
If the Cunard line was unable to hold its own withont assistance, Lord Brassey thought the Government should help patriotically. If the American Shipping Subsidies Bill was adopted, thus compelling the owners of the Cunard line to seek fresh capital, Great Britain ought to assist.
If payment of British subsidies was not arranged, said his Lordship, British sailing ships would entirely dis-
appear.
