The news received by the American mail regarding the Empire defence scliomc is looked upon by the Daily Telegraph as ;m attempt to force Imperial Federation. The ; Telegraph says there is ominously good reason to suspect that an early effort will be made to bring the undesirable and unwise idea of defence , federation into practical shape. It is none too soon for an emphatic Australian repudiation of the scheme, which will impose a galling limitation onself- ■ government and introduce militarism in its most obnoxious form.
