.— __—-♦►— NELSON RACES. Press Association. Electric Telegraph. Copyright. Ricumond, April 9. There is fine weather and a good attendance for the races. An unfortunate accident, resulting in the loss of the Blenheim horse Hurleblast, happened just before start ing the first race. Hurleblast, who had accepted in the Maiden and Hope Hack events, was being ridden from the stables of the Railway Hotel by his jockey. On approaching the entrance to the course the horse was startled by a fruit and cordial vendor's barrow standing at the side of the road. The horse, in shying, got into a deep ditch opposite the gate. The jockey slipped off, and thus escaped serious injury, but had to reconcile himself to a ducking in the ditch. Hurleblast's hind legs went into the ditch first, and in ! struggling to get out he doubled his body down on to his near hind leg, and broke it at the thigh. The horse was taken into an adjoining paddock and shot. [Hurleblast belonged to Mr Geo.
