London, April 8. Returns just published show that of 2937 officers and 63,311 mcii invalided from tfouth Africa 7478 died, and 5262 were discharged as unfit for duty. The total deaths in South Africa were as follows :•— Officers. Men. Killed in action ... 502 5,114 Died of wounds ... 176 1,774 Died in captivity... 5 97 Died of disease ... 313 12,403 Accidental Deaths. 21 543 1,020 19,931 1,020 Total deaths 20,951
Boers would retain their independence, though willing to cede the Rand. There was now 'more fighting on the Boera' side than at the beginning of the war.
