The annual meeting of the Canterbury Industrial Association was held last nighb. The balance sheet showed receipts amounting to £4^91 16s lid, and an expenditure of £4305 10s sd.
The Chairman stated that the Government had done its share in opening up the country, and ifc now remained with the industries to do their part by improving the quality of their goods and keeping right up with machinery and appliances, so that local manufacturers should gain a name equal to that of New Zealand mutton.
A lengthy discussion took place on the action of the Government in purchasing rolling stock outside the colony. The speakers emphasised the desirability of making use of local manufacturers fpp obtaining rolling
stock.
Mr H. B. Kirk, the originator of the Is presentation fund to the Premier, said that, though a Government supporter, he deprecated the attitude of the Government in procuring rolling stock outside the colony.
