Sydney, February 14.
There was a big attendance at the match. The wicket was in splendid condition, and the weather was
glorious.
Maclaren won the toss and opened the innings with Hay ward, to the bowling of Saunders and Noble.
The pair batted very cautiously, Saunders particularly giving Hayward trouble. Excellent fielding also had a bad effect on the run getting.
After luncheon Saunders dismissed Hayward with a magnificent ball—one wicket for 73.
Tyldesley filled the vacancy, and the scoring progressed very slowly. A couple of hours were occupied in registering the first century.
At one stage Maclaren took eighteen minutes in adding a single, while Tyldesley adopted stonewalling tactics.
Armstrong was tried, but Tyldesley especially knocked him about.
At the afternoon tea the score stood at 174, the product of three hours' cricket.
