SIR ALFRED MILNBR'S IMPRESSIONS.
THE MAGNIFICENT RESPONSE OF LOYALISTS.
Received April 19,10 a.m. London, April 18. In a despatch dated February 6th, Sir Alfred Milner foresaw the subjugation of the Republics would be more difficult, harassing, and expensive than anticipated, and it was useless to deny the preceding year had been one of retrogression. The brilliant dash by Lord Roberts on Johannesburg saved the foundation of the Transvaal wealth. When the wave of guerilla warfare spread southwards into Cape Colony, the response of loyalists to the call was magnificent, and inspired the Dutch with respect. Although loyal, ists were sick to death of the war, and many wore ruined, they were almost unanimously preparing to carry on the war indefinitely rather than run the risk of compromise, and leaving the remotest chance of a recurrence of the
scourge.
