CENSUS RETURNS.
MARLBOROUGH FIGURES
We are indebted to the courtesy of MiArmstrong, the Chief Enumerator of the Marlborough district, for information as to a number of local census re-
turns
The population of the Borough of Picton on March 31st last was 974 (502 males and 472 females), including 95 people, on the steamer Wainui, in poi-fc at that date. Tlio l-etnrn of the census of 1896 was 870 ; so that, deducting- the steamer figure, the population of the Borough shows an increases for the five years of 9. It is to be explained that the Picton Freezing Works, the establishment oil which*"has no doubt brought about a considerable increase of population in the Picton locality generally, are not in the Borough.
The population of thoHavelock town district is 310 (178 males and 138 females) as- against 305 in 1800.
The Eon wick returns arc not yetavailable, but it is believed that while the population of the subdivision as a, whole comprising the Renwick roads and Springlands has been stationary, that of the township of Renwicktown, which was 324 in 189(5, has decreased.
The return from the Spring Creek district, comprising an area between the Wairau and Opawa rivers and representing the Spring Creek road, district, shows a population of 810, consisting of 430 males and 389 females. Thi§ is an increase of 50 on the 1896 return.
The population of Port Underwood has increased from 45 in 1895 to 80 "(45 males and 35 females.) :
Other returns, with respect to which we are not able at the present moment to give comparisons, areKaituna 509— 265 males and 244 females ; Mahakipapa 192 —107 males, 85 females.
The Blenheim returns have not yet been compiled.
