Wellington, April IG. Mr Morton, Inspector of Schools at Hokitika, lias been appointed Secretary of the School Teachers' Salaries Commission.

The hearing of the demands made by the Napier Painters and Decorators Union against the employers -will be taken in Wellington. Recently the Hairdressers' Assistants Union made demands upon the employers for shorter hours of labour, increased rates of pay, and a defined system as regards employment of apprentices. The demands^ were considered at a meeting of the master hairdressers of the city and suburbs as impracticable. It is expected that the Conciliation Board will be asked to adjudicate in the matter.

Timahu, April IG. The Hospital and Charitable Aid Board adopted estimates to-day amounting to £6370. The cost of the last two years was £6044 and £6046. Of this £1711 and £1800-wore for charitable aid. The Secretary estimates the relief by old age. pennons at about £300. Of this £90 was collected from the inmatos ef the Home. The inmates of the Home cost 8s 2dper weak.

Napier, April 16. Mr R. T. Walker, who for the pa&fr 22 years has filled the editorial chair of the Hawke's Bay Herald, and. who prior to that was for same time subeditor of the Wellington Evening Post, died to-night. He had been ailing for some little time. He leaves a wife and three children.
