Lweucakgill, April 2. Louisa Dickens, a married woman, accompanied by her son, Ta lad of 13, died on the Monowai on the passage from Melbourne under" circumstances that necessitated an inquest at the Bluff. A post mortem disclosed extensive lung trouble and peritonitis, but the cause of death was rupture of a perforating ulcer in the stomach. A verdict was returned accordingly. Mrs Dickens' husband is said to be in Palmerston North.

SHOCKING AFFAIR.
Invercargill, April 3. A shocking tragedy occurred at Woodland last night, when Mary Shiroffs, aged 16, was shot dead by her brother John, aged 19. Both parents are dead and the children ;work on a farm. John had been presented "with a breach-loading gun, which he was oiling preparatory to using. His sister playfully chaffed him with not being able to shoot, and after he had put two cartridges in the gun he made a jesting reply and .pointed the weapon at her.
