THE UNIVERSITY BOAT RACE.

A VICTORY FOR OXFORD

Press Association. Electric Telegraph. Copyright. London, March 30. The University boat race Oxford v. Cambridge was rowed in a strong gusty wind and rain. Cambridge won the toss, and chose the Surrey station. The boats passed Crabtree and Hammersmith Bridge on level terms. Thence the water was fearfully rough to Chiswick Church, where Cambridge led by a length. The lead was increased to a length and a half before reaching Barnes Bridge, where the water was comparatively smooth. Here Oxford spurted magnificently, and drew up level again at. times. Cambridge gamely responded, and a ding-dong struggle ensued for the remainder of the course, Oxford winning by two feet. Time 22min Slsec. Both crews were greatly distressed at the finish. The betting was 3 to 1 against Oxford before the start of the race. Fifty-eight races have now been rowed between the two rival Universities. Of these Oxford has won 38, and" Cambridge 24, and a dead heat resulted in 1877.
