Mr Sim, for defendant, applied for and got stay of judgment for a fortnight, to give an opportunity to apply for a new trial on the ground of misdirection and excessive damages. A painful sequel to the notion was the suicide of Jones, the defendant. He left for his home by train, and sat writing, his wife being beside him, till 11 o'clock, when he rose and went out. As he did not return m reasonable time, the household made search, and found his body m a water-hole near the house. Jones was m the prime of life, and well-to-do, having two farms, and the monetary damages of the action would have affected him but little. He was a leading man m his district.
