A CONSUL'S KINDNESS.
» NEW ZEALAND'S APPRECIATION. Mr John Berry, of Okaramio, writes to us as follows :— " There have been letters of congratulations and testimonials forwarded to the various heroes of the war from New Zealand, but I have not seen an account of even • thanks ' having | been sent to the American Consul m i Pretoria, who I think ought to be recognised by us New Zealanders for his kindness to our boys while m captivity." i Our correspondent refers to a gentleman to whom New Zealand is deeply indebted- It will be remembered that seventeen men of the First Contingent were captured at Doornspruit and sent to Pretoria. We are pleased to be able to state that at a publio meeting held m Dunedin on Thursday, presided over by the Mayor, a resolution was carried, "That tbia meeting deeply appreciates the kind services of Mr Hay, the American Consul at Pretoria, m securing batter treatment for the Britieh prisoners at Pretoria, including those of the oolonial forces, and is of opition that the people of this colony should accord some tangible expression of their gratitude to Mr Hay, both for his services personally, and as an acknowledgment of the generous action of one nation to another." A Committee ' was appointed to give effect to the resolution.
