Replying at Wellington on Saturday to n deputation on local matter?, eaya a Press telegram, the Acting-Premier, the Hon. J. G. WerJ, BsM the Government was uot going to ba made nee of by lind proprietors Mho held on to land to force up its value. Where this was found to be the case the Government would acquire land elsewhere, and provide mesas of communication for men they pluced on it, passing by those localities where the squeezing process had been tried. M/W. Jeffries, who leaves for Temnka this afternoon, was presented on Saturday by the officials of the local branch of the Bank of New Zealand with a handsome pair of gold and greenstone sleeve liuke. Tbe presentation waa made by Mr Hlndmareb, the Manager, who m a few well-chosen words expieased tbe regret of the etaff at Mr Jeffries' departure, and their hearty wishes for future success. Mr Jeffries was also tbe recipient of a travellingbag from his fellow-lodgers and friends; and m thb evening he was the guest of a numerous company at the Masonic Hotel, on which occasion he was given a hearty valediction. Beference was made to the loss that was felt m social and athletic circles. Tbe Maryborough Mounted Rifles will also miss a good member. Mr Vickcr?, who succeeds Mr Jeffries at the Bank as accountant, has arrived m Blenheim from Invercaroill. At Ewart's Hall on Staurday night the Corrick Family gave their seodnd entertainment, producing an excellent programme, the gems of which were Gaonou's serenade, and Ganz's " Dear Bud of Winter," splendidly rendered by M'ss Alice Coirick, Laet bight the Family appeared before the largest audience of the geaeoc, every part oi the Hall being filled. The programme gave, much pleasure, acd tbe talented combination may be oiedited with one of tbe best Sunday concerts ever given m Blenheim* The audience had the opportunity of hearing Miss Alice Oorrick's beautiful soprano m the kind of mnsio that is peculiarly puited to it. Her numbers were " With Verdure Olad" (Hadyn), " There is a Green Hill far away* (Guonod), " 0 Divine Redeemer " (Gnonod), and Braga's la Serenata, two of these bains rendered m response to encore?. All these compositions were interpreted with fine arfhtic effect. Mrs Coirick's best effort was "The New Kingdom," and she was also successful m '•" He Wipes a Tear." Mr Oorrick sang " Nazareth" acd " Oorae ye Faithful." Miss Ethel rendered «' The Better Lind" ; Master Leonard creditably played a clarionet solo ; and Miss Euby a cornet solo, "The Holy City," with o/cbesfral acoomp.acimeut. The eff-cliva accompaniments playej by Miss Corrick must also be mentioned. Orchestral selections and concerted numbers went to moke up a pleasurable programme..
