BOER REPORT~THAT HE HAB RETIRED. THIB 16 DISCREDITED AT HOME. ONLY A PARTIAL WITHDRAWAL. TO SECURE a"sHORTER OUT. EXPLANATION IN THE HOQSE. fONITBD PB«aS ASSOCIATION ] London, February 10. The Boers report that General Bullet, after being heavily shelled, again withdrew across the Tugela river. The War Office subsequently received a confirmation of the news of General Butler's retirement. Prior to the official confirmation of the intelligence of General Buller's retirement aoross the Tugela river, the Right Hon. A. J. Balfour, Leader of the House, said m the House of Commons that General Buller was not pressing the advance to Ladysmith from the position he occupied on Wednesday, and the Government was not pressing him for information while operations were m progress. The despatch of the Daily News correspondent showed that after the British secured a footing at Nolen Drift, where the crossing was made, pontoons were sent further down the river m front of Krantz Kop, m order to obtain a shorter out to the Boer positions across the river. In a later edition the Daily News has a footnote m which it ooncludes that the conformation of the ground misled the Boers at Doom Kop, who imagined that a partial movement was m reality a withdrawal of the whole of Buller's forces. The Daily News discredited the Boer report of General Buller's withdrawal.
