MINING NEWS.

♦ THE WARDEN'S COURT. A sitting of the Warden's Oourt was held yesterday afternoon, Mr J« Allen presiding. Mi J. P. Ward applied, on behalf of Mr Geo. Pott, New Plymouth, for a prospecting license over 100 acres m the Wairau Valley— ten chains along the Wairau River, on the south side of Knowles Creek and 1 extending 45 chains to a peg on ' Dismal Greek, thence m a westerly ' direction to Knowles Greek. The area, which was on Mr McFarlaoe's g.-azing run, had been duly pegged off. It was proposed to sink about half a dozen shafts, and drive as , mauy tunnels. Every foot of stuff taken out would be tested ; and the shafts would be filled up and the tunnels rendered safe, to the satisfaction of Mr McFarlaue. The name of the claim was " Grlenorcha." Mr McCallum, on behalf of Mr McFarlane (who was present) withdrew the objections that had been lodged. The application was granted. Mr Ward also applied for a prospecting area over 100 acres— about 30 chains up Wantwood (Flaxmiil) Creek and extending to Snowies Greek and Bluff. The name of the claim was the " Ladysmith." Mr J. McFarlane, holder of the small grazing run, on which the area extends, lodged objections, and gave evidence. This was his homestead block, on which he hid erected a two-roomed house and a couple of miles of fencing, ploughed 16 or 16 acres, and sown 12 acres m oats. There was a flat comprising 40 or 50 acres. Malone and Jackson, whom he had permitted to mine on one acre, had. he was told, sold their claim to Mr Ward for £500. Mr Ward explained that it was not iutended to touch the low lying ground, but only the* terraces. This explanation seemed to satisfy Mr McFarlane, who said he did not wish to throw any unreasonable obstacle m the way of the mining industry. His Worship adj lurned the cas9 till 10.30 on Saturday next, m order that m the meantime Mr Ward might satisfy Mr McFarlane on the ground ao to the location of the area applied for. An application for water-races, at the same locality, was similarly postponed. An application was made by Mr J. P. Ward for a prospecting license over 100 acres north-west of Bhotuvor. The name of the claim was "The General White." This was granted.
