The Highland Brigade were guided through intense darkness and rain close to the Boer entrenchments, which were screened by leaves. The Boers silently waited till they approached, and met them with a hail of lead. Two hundred were mown down and the Brigade fell back. The Black Watch on reforming mustered only 160. Lord Methuen renewed the attack «t daybreak, 31 big guns covering the advance. The Gordon's heroioally attempted to retrieve the disaster passing across the dead and wounded, but found the task impossible. The Boers trenches were protected by barbed wire. The Guards failed m their attempt to turn the enemy's flank, owing to the arrival of 2000 fresh Boers and a number of gune. The British loss totalled 833 killed and wounded, including 703 belonging to the Highland Brigade. There were 69 casualties amongst the officers.
