THE EXPENDITURE IN WESTLAND.
♦ 70 188 BDIIOB. Bib,— My attention has just been oalled to b letter signed " Working Man" under the above heading m yonr issue of the 4th inst, wherein he discourses on reduotion m wages, importation of oueap shearers, etc, etc, by Mr Clifford, of Flaxbourne Station. I feel very sorrry, indeed, for " Working Man," whom I am sore ooonpies the unfortunate position of having bis services refused at even a smaller rate of wageß thao he quotes. Now, a question. Does -" W.M." know the unenviable position New Zealand Bhearers of his calibre ooouaied m the shearing strikes m Australia m ihe year 1891-97. If not, why did he not enquire before rushing into print or trying 4o make politioal capital out of the importation of eo-oalled cheap shearers. I may inform him that the Australian shearers at JFlaxbourne pay their own expenses to and tfrom New Zealand, have never "ratted" on their fellow shearers, have always (mind, BlwayB) received district or Union rates of W ages.— l am, etc, John Jahbbon. (On behalf self and other Australian shearers.) Royal Hotel, 11th Deo., 1899.
