♦— THE COUET HOUSE DESTROYED. [UNIXHD PBES3 ASBOOUIIOH.I Palmerston North, October 14. About midnight the. Palmerston Court house was discovered to be on fire. An alarm was quickly given, but despite the efforts of the brigade the building was totally destroyed. Bankruptcy and probate papers were saved, also £25 m cash which amount was removed from the safe. The law library, the property of members of the legal profession, valued at £120, was lost, but the books were insured for £100 m the New Zealand Insurance Company. The stamps and record books were fortunately locked up m the strong room when tho court house closed yesterday afternoon. The origin of the fire is a mystery. It is surmised that it started m the telephone room, situated close to the room occupied by the Clerk of the Court. The bailiff bit a number of mileage vouchers with stamps attached. The Clerk of the Court lost a lot of valuable books, his own private property.
