The Marlborough Express. PUBLISHED EVERY EVENING. Tuesday, October 5, 1897. THE RAILWAY LEAGUE.
♦- Now that Parliament is m session, we trust the committee of the recently formed Marlborough Railway League will wake up and justify its existence. There are rumors of a new loan, and whether these be true or not, it is certainly the duty, of the League to put its case as strongly as possible before the Ministry and the members of both Houses. The Financial Statement will be brought down, we have good reason to believe, within a fortnight from now, and we certainly think that before the debate on the Statement begins there should be some definite organised expression of opinion from the people of this province m favour of the muchdesired connecting line with the southern trunk line. We understand, from Wellington, that the Poverty Bay Light Railways League has already sent, circulars to each member, pointing out the necessity for th% construction of a light line to Botorua, to connect with the Auckland lines, and a circular has also been sent up to the members urging that attention he paid to the further extension of the Otago Central. Surely it is time for our League to be up and doing. We would suggest that an influentially signed petition be sent to Wellington with the least possible delay, and that copies of the League's programme, or at least some general statement of the scheme, be forwarded at once to members of both Houses. Already a deputation consisting of several of Marlborough's most prominent settlers has been appointed to interview the Government, and no time should be lost by the deputation m waiting upon Ministers with referenoe to the project we have so muoh at heart.
