Tolano has left the Hayman«Bt John Company, and he will return to Sydney by thg Waikare. Mr Tolano will probably join Mr Bignold's company m Sydney, OoBBEepoHDBNOB.— We have reoeived a lengthy letter from Mr H. B. Huddleston, 0.E., on. his favorite subjeot, "Flood Belief," which we are usable to find room for just now. P.T.O.— On our fourth page to-day will be found an aooount of last night's flood relief meeting and other news items ; on the front page a report of Mr T. E. Taylor's latest deliverance m the House. Thb Abht.— Adjutant Bishop's meeting at the Salvation Army Barracks last evening was well attended, the address being well reoeived. To-night the Adjutant's subjeot will be " Lies : Blaok and White." Lxvh Stock.— At Wanganui live Btock are selling:— Cattle— Best bullocks, £6 10s to £7 10a ; others, £5 7a 61 to £6 ; equal to 15s tbe 1001 b. Sheep -Fat ewes, 10s 2d to 11s sd ; small wethers half fat, 10s 2d ; lambs, 6s lOd to 7s 2d. Pigs-Baconers! 41s to 465 ; good pork, up to 80s ; storeß, 13s 6d to 14a 6d. Lighthouses.— Last year the cost of maintaining the lighthouses was £15,644. The expenses of steamers visiting ihe lighthouses was £7000 m addition. The Bum of £15,995 was collected for light dues during the year, a Blight increase on last year. Old Sextlebb Gore.— Another of Canterbury's old settlers, Mr John Hailler, who arrived m the colony m 1859, has died at the age of 61. The death is also recorded m Wellington on Sunday night of Mr Walter Turnbul), at the age of 74 Mr Turnbull, who arrived m 1857, was one of Wellington's best known and most success' ful merohantß, Thb Pbrmmb.— The Wellington correspondent of tbe Otago Daily Times writes :— 11 Tbe probability of Mr Seddon leaving the party sooner or later and going home to London Beems more than ever likely to come about. Of oouree he will have to patoh things up as well bb he can before leaving, for it would never do for him to go home as a defeated or apparently unsuccessful Premier. No doubt, with his abilities and ambition, he would do fairly well m London, and tbe obanoes are that, if he played his oardß well, he would sooner or later find himself m tbe House of Commons. No doubt the St. Helen's people would be glad of his services if opportunity offered."

This rule reads as follows :— " Any owner or trainer who shall knowingly employ an un licensed jook6y, or any trainer who shall train without a lioense, shall be fined a suji not exceeding twenty pounds." Forms of application oan be obtained at the Secre tary's office. ModicAii —The Hibernian Band will play the following programme of muaio from the Rotunda on Saturchy night, commencing at. 8 o'olook :— Qa ok step, " The Oampaigu ;" fantasia, "A Military Tatoo; 1 ' waltz, 11 Myrine ;" march, " The Iron Horse ;" fantasia, " The Keepsake;" march, "The Crusader ;" " God save the Qaeen." The band will also play at Tua Marina on Sunday afternoon at 3 o'olook. B.R.V.— A meeting of the Blenheim Rifle Shooting Committee waa held last night when arrangements and oonditions for the Beaaon were fixed. Lieut Poison, Col-Sergt. Brewster and Corpl. Dawes were appointed a Bab-committee to invite and meet three members from the Mounted and City Bifla Corp?, to make arrangements for the Ist November Bhooting. Wbathkb Fobeoast.— Capt Edwin wired as follows :— " Wind between north and west and southweßt at all places ; barometer fall at all places ; sea heavy on all western ooasts of both islands and on east aoast Boutb of Napier after 18' hours ; tides high on all western ooasts, good on all east coast southward of East Oape. Westerly gales and rain are to be expected at all plaoes, and generally with cold weather." ThhSathbbley Concert. —The final rehearsal of the ohoruseß which forms an attractive feature m the programme, takes place to-night m E wart's Hall, at 7.30 prompt. ,An excellent practice was held last night m St Andrew's sohoolroom, and tbe operatio ohoruseß are being sung with a considerable amount of finish. Great interest is being taken by tbe young people who are taking part, aud it is hoped that their efforts to do some good will be appreciated. The Pbbhisb'b Detectives.— lt turns out after all that the two English detectives said to have been engaged for the Colony by Mr Seddoo, and whom Mr Soobie MoEeneie so oleverly tamed to advantage m bis Addreßßxin-Beply speeob, were not engaged at all. Mr Seddon did consult Commißeioner Tunbridge on the point, but the new head of tbe police wanted to judge tbe capabilities of the men already here before deciding that it was necessary to introduce English experts. The Pbtone Mdrdeb.— James Shore, who was arrested and oommitted for trial.apon tbe oharge of being the perpetrator of tbe orime for whioh Bosher was ultimately hanged, is about to petition the House for compensation for wrongful imprisonment. At the time of tbe arrest the opinion was widely held that the polioe were blundering, and it is asserted (says the Post) that m oonneotion with Shore's -petition some startling disclosures will be made. The petition, whioh claims £300, was plaoed m the bands of Mr J. Hatoheson on Saturday by Mr T. M. Wilford, who was counsel for both Shore and Bosher m the Supreme Court proceedings. Juveniles Dbpbatiiy.— Tbe Juvenile Depravity Bill, just printed, is very Btringent m its provisions. The Governor is empowered to appoint proteotion officers, and to establish refuges for the prevention of immorality amongst girls apparently under 16. The officers may question, take home, and arrest girls m tbe streets at unreasonable hours, acoording to discretion. Powers are also given to searob bouses, and for detaining tbe girls arrestbd m refuges, Provision is made for tbe punishment of negleoted parents, and tbe suppression of youthful gambling. Extension of the Municipal Franchise. —Although tbe Local Government Bill is not to be prooeeded with this session, it is understood that a portion of it will be included m the Franchise Enlargement Bill whioh the Pi emier has on tbe stooks. Under this measure the county and municipal franchise is to ba extended to all adults haying a twelve months' residential qualification, and to occupiers of ratable property having a tenanoy of not less than three months. The Bill is likely to reoeive hearty support from the Radicals m the House. Sisgulab. — Mr A. S. Easton, a Wanganui resident, at present an inmate of the Wellington Hospital, underwent an operation recently whioh diaolosed a singular fact. When a boy (says tbe Wanganui Herald) Mr Easton, m playiDg on the beaoh, bad a rather severe fall, causing an abrasion of the Bkin, It healed up, and nothing more was thought of it at the time ; but of recent years be has experienced severe pains m the limb. Finally, be plaoed himself under treatment m the Palmerston Hospital, but without any appreciable benefit. Ultimately he prooured admittance to the Wellington Hospital, .where the operation referred to took place. A little above tho mark of tbe abrasion oaused co many years ago, and buried underneath the muaole somewhere near the top of the tbigb, was found a pieoe of pawa shell, whioh bad been tbe oauae of all the recent trouble. It was abstracted, and the operation was m all reßpeots suooesßful. i A Nabbow Escape. — A judge of tba Supreme Court, a Blue Ribbon barrister, and several persona of lesser consequence were the other day perilously near to an innocent breaoh of tbe law. It was (says the Dunedin Star) at Inveroargill, during tbe reoent visit of Mr Justice Denniston. An application was to be made for an order m respeot to a man who is m tbe category of " prohibited persons." As tbe application was to be consented to and would not oooupy more than a minute, His Honor told the parties interested that they had better oome to bis rooms at tbe Club Hotel, and he would do the business at onoe ; and, this arrangement suiting everyone, the persons concerned were about to walk aoross to the hotel, when it suddenly ooourred to the barrister that it was an offenoe for anyone to aooompany a prohibited person into lioensed premises, or to be m bis oompany there, and the party straightway retreated, preferring to take no risks of a wholesale information, but to wait until the Judge got to the safer area of the Courthouse.
