LOCAL BODIES' MEETINGS.

LOWER WAIRAU IUVER BOARD. The newly constituted Board held their first monthly meeting last night. There were present — Messrs Oarr, Adams, Rayner, Birch and Meehan. After some discussion Mr Oarr was elected Chairman, Mr Kayner, who was proposed by Mr Meehan, declining the position. Mr Carr briefly returned thanks. In the unavoidable absence of the j Secretary, no correspondence was read. Mr Adams moved that all riparian property owners from the wharf to the bar be served with notice to cut willows on the river banks within seven days, and that failing compliance with the request the willows be cut at the expense of the defaulters. Mr Rayner seconded. Mr Birch spoke of the necessity of obliging defaulters to defray the expense of such work. He had heard of property-owners defying the Board m this matter. Mr Meehan thought that seven days was not a reasonable time. He moved an amendment that the notice provide for one month. The amendment was carried. Mr Adams moved that plans and specifications be prepared and tenders called for the Temaining portion of the town banking, and that the work be gone on with as soon as possible. Mr Rayner seconded. Mr Birch would willingly support the motion if the finances were m a condition to meet the cost of the work. Mr Adams explained that there was good provision for the "financing of the scheme. Mr Meehan favored the motion. He thought the waterway of the bridges shoa;d be widened. The approach of one' bridge protruded right into the river. The motion was carried.** The Chairman moved that tenders be called foi the construction of three more flood gates m connection with the town banking— two m Grove Road and one m Collie's Hollow. Mr Birch seconded. Provision was necessary for the escape of water that might be brought down by Taylor floods, i The motion was carried. Mr Adams moved that the Borough Council's^ Committee be asked to meet the Board at 2 p.m. next Wednesday, with a view of having the waterway of the bridges widened and the bell tower protected. — Carried. • ~^ A Works Committee was appointed consisting of Messrs Carr, Birch, and Adams; and a Finance Committee consisting of Messrs Rayner and Meehan. The Inspector reported as to the advisability of accepting an offer for flax and willows on the Taylor River bed. On the motion of Mr Meehan the offer was deferred, and it was resolved that the Board visit the locality to obtain a personal knowledge of the character of the Taylor Eiver. The Chairman suggested that steps be taken to have the willows from Dodson's to Rose's Overflow, and m Foster's Channel, cut. The matter was deferred. Mr Rayner said that m regard to the proposed acquirement by the Boaid of property belonging to the Bank, a communication had been sent to the head quarters of the Bank. The meeting was adjourned to next Wednesday evening.
