WAIRAU HOSPITAL & CHARTABLE AID BOARD.

The monthly meeting was held yesterday afternoon. Present : — Messrs Griffiths, Houldsworth, Matthews. Carter, Trevor, McOallum, and Vavasour. Mi Griffiths occupied the chair m the absence of the Chairman, Mr Conolly, HOSPITAL ACCOMMODATION. Dr McGregor, Inspector of Hospitals, wrote from Wellington, returning the two plans of additional accommodation for the nurses at the Hospital. .Ho approved of the larger and more expensive plan, with tho exception of That part of it providing for a doorway between tha surgery and laundry. He- failed to see the use of such a doorway, and would be glad to receive any explanation as to its necessity. With regard to the other plan he could not approve of it under any circumstances^ The bedrooms were too small, and it was absurd to expect nurses to dress m a narrow passage. It was resolved to adopt the plan approved by Dr McGregor, and after some discussion, m which the Board's architect, Mr Huddleston and Dr Cleghorn took part, to leave the details as to the surgery, laundry, etc., for the doctor to arrange after consulting with the matron. A few minor alterations m the plan were also decided upon. The architect said that the specifications would be ready m a week ; and it was resolved to call for tenders for the work immediately, to close m a fortnight. A Building Committee, consisting of Messrs Conolly (Chairman), Griffiths, and Houldsworth, was appointed to accept a tender and supervise the work, The matter of providing a shelter shed or other convenience at the Hospital for the doctors' and visitors' horses and traps was referred to the Visiting Committee for a report to be presented at next meeting 1 . He recommended that some more trees be planted m front of the Hospital, and that the present growths be attended to. A sum of £10 was voted for these purposes. HOSPITAL STAFF. The term of Miss Redwood, probationer nurse, having expired, it was resolved to place her on the staff for another six months, conformably with the usual custom. It was resolved to call for applications for the position .of probationer nurse vice Miss Hewitt resigned. This is a formality. Miss Hewitt temporarily filled the position vacated by her sister when the latter went to Nelson, and has carried on the duties for some time past. It is the Board's wish to appoint the second Miss Hewitt to the position, and the advertising for applications is a matter of form observed m accordance with the requirements of the Standing Orders. MISCELLANEOUS. Accounts were passed for payment. Mr Griffiths reported that owing to the absence during the month of the chairman and himself the Committee appointed m the matter had been unable to prepare a scheme for the better maintenance of the old men at the Hospital.
