This case was adjourned for a week go as to enable plaintiff to produce formal evidence of the assignment to him of the book debts m the estate m question At the Magistrate's Court yesterdiy afternoon W. Spiers was charged on the information of bis wite with having deserted her and six children, without leaving adequate moans of support. Mrs Spiets deposed that defendant left her m March last and weDt to Nelson. Sho followed him aud brought back the two children he hid taken away with him. She had received nothing from him since he left her. Defendant bad ill-treated her at times. He deserted her after ncousing her of infidelity, which was utterly false. Defendant, sworn, said that he left bis wife on March 2nd and went to Nelson, taking two of the children, whom he placed m the care of bis mother. Ho rented n house for the ohi'dran and pro* vided for them. On one occasion he endeavored to bring bis wife home from her Bister's house, whioh he considered not a fit place for her to stay at, but be received nothing but abuse. He denio'l the parentage of all the children, nnd related how on one occasion, by looking through a wiudow, he detected his wife m the commital of an impropriety. When bis wife was m Nelson she showed that she was m possession of pleaty ot money, and he wanted to know whore it came from. He was williug to keep some of the children, but not all of them ; and be objected to giving his wife money. Informant denied having behaved improperly. After questioning the parties at some length His Worship made an order against defendant of 10a a week for tho maiafeuunca of the children, defendant agreeing to make arrangements with tradesmen for the supply of necessities. At Masterton, Mr Hutchison, S.M , gave judgment for plaintiff, m a case m which C. Paine sought to recover £39, sick pay alleged to ba due from the Masterton Foresters Lodge. The defence was that plaintiff was " unfinancial." Aa appeal is likely to In made, At Dunedin three traders were each fined £5 costs, and ordered to pay treble the airount of the tax for failing to make returns of incomes.
