This go-a-hoad firm seems determined to cater handsomely for the good people of Marlborougb, and suocoss will undoubtedly reward their effort. Civil Casks.— The following oivil business was transacted at Court this morning, before Mr J. Allen, S.M.: — Matthews v. Maher, claim £1 2a for firewood left on premises oooupied by defendant, whioh was claimed by him for damages alleged to have been done by plaintiff to his feDce m removing the wood. After hearing the evidence, judgment was given for 18a and costs. An unusually large number of oases were struck out or settled out of Court. Thb Gebjhn Abhz. — The German Army is the strongest and best organised m the world, but it could not get to Pretoria m the teeth of the British fleet, or even into the Congo, if that frightful route were tried ; and what would the German Emperor, with all his immense resouroes for war, be able actually to do ? Here lies the misery of the American people, the greatest and the best eduoated people m the world— they have no faith ia the future, " KiNG9LAND ".—Lieutenant-Colonel Fergusson writes to the London Times suggesting a new name fojr South Australia. He saya : — " People who have never been to Australia often ask ' Where is South Australia ?' May I revive a suggestion I made some fourteen years ego, while serving with the defenoe forces of that great province ? ' Central Australia,' or ' MidAustralia,' would not be quite descriptive of a territory touching the ocean both on north and south. Why not take the name of •Kingsland?' This would balance well with Queensland, and would reoall the faot of the foundation of the colony having been laid m the reign of William IV., after whose Queen the fair capital is named." Thb Milduba Expbbimbnt.— The Vie* torian Government has appointed a Royal Commission to enquire into the question of assisting the Mildura Bottlers m the way of renovating the pumping maotiinery and irrigation channels. The chief engineer has estimated that two-fiftbs of the water pumped was lost owing to the bad condition of the ohannels. Some £40,000 was required to pet them into proper order. Under the Act Messrs Obaffey Bros, were held re* sponsible for repairs, but m their present finanoial position they were not likely to carry out the reconstruction of the ohannels. It would therefore devolve upon the Water Trust, which was also unprovided with funds, and if the settlement is not to collapse the Government will have to take the work m hand, Ministers will be guided by the report of the Commission. The liquidator's report showa that the amount due by shareholders is £239,000 odd, all of which ia called up, but little realised. Of the amount, G. Chaffey is liable for £159,000, and W. B. Chaffey for £7700,
