A SAFE BLOWN OPEN. £100 STOLEN. [united press association.] Hawera, May 7. A telegram states that the Eltharc railway station was broken open early this morning and looted. The thieves entered by forcing the doors. The safe was then blown open by some explosive and £100 m cash stolen. At 7 a.m. an empty cash box was found blown open, and ihis was the first known of the robbery, though it is reported that about 2 a.m. a noise -was heard, which is now supposed to have been an explosion. Westport, May 7. The Arbitration and Conciliation Board for the district of Westland (J. A. Millar, M.H.8., Treasman, Bailie and Kettle), have been sitting here on and off for a week past, endeavouring to select a Chairman, but have failed to do so. A dozen names of local men were suggested but objected to by one side or the other. Several gentlemen to whom the Board would agree declined to act. The Justice Department objected to the Stipendiary Magistrate taking the position. The appointment will now be made by the Government. The business to be brought before the Board is disputes regarding hewing rates at the Cardiff and Westport Coal Companies' Collieries. Peter Segree, carpenter of the barque Cynosure, was remanded this morning on a charge of stabbing a coal miner named Scoble m a hotel yesterday, Wellington, May 8. Mrs Falconer, wife of Capt. Falconer, of the Torpedo corps, died last night, after a long and painful illness ; aged 32.
