SOCIAL REUNION.
♦ The Literary ani Debating Society held a highly successful social m "Wesley Hall last night, m celebration of the opening of the debating season. The proceedings took the form of a dinner, conjoined with an excellent toast list, which was interspersed with musical items. A large number of people, including a goodly proportion of ladies, were present, the seating of the three long tables, which extended from one end of the Hall to the other, being ful'y occupied. The affair was of a most pleasurable nature, aud passed off m a manner which shows that a great deal of interest is being taken m the welfare of the Society. The Hall was prettily decorated for the occasion with £Ugs and vegetation. The members of the Women's Christian Temparance Uuion provided a dinner thoroughly complete m its menu, and of an excellence that must be given the highest praise ; indeed, the good ladies are to be heartily complimented on th.3 merits of their catering arrangements. Mr T, L. Bu : ck, M.H.8., presided, and, a pianoforte overture having been played by Miss Elbeck, proposed the first toast on the list, " The Queen and Empire." The programme continued as follows ; —Song, " Bule Britannia," Mr J. Rose ; response to toast, Mr E. H. Penny ; vocal duet, " Maying," Mrs Kerr and Mr J. Rose ; toast, " The land we live m," Mr D. Douglas ; song, " Home Sweet Home," Miss E. Rose ; response to toast, Mr S. Norgrove ; toast, " Homes of Parliament," Mr H. Jellyman ; eong (comic) "Nothing," Mr A. Carter ; response to toast, Mr T. L. Buick ; toast, " The Literary and Debating Society," Mr E. H. Penny ; recitation, " Trouble m the Amen corner," Mr Chaplin ; response to toast, MrL. A. Browne ; toast, ''Commerce and Agriculture," Mr F. Hill ; song, Miss Ball ; response to toast, Mr A. J. Litcbfield j toast, " Education," Mr R Rice ; response. Rev. T. Fee ; pianoforte solo, Miss Nosworthy ; toast, " The Ladies," Mr W. MoCarraber ; song, " The Mocking Bird," Mrs T. Davies ; response to toast, Mr Gerald Allen; toast, "The Press," Mr D Sinclair ; response, Mr W. R. Allen, The singing of the National Anthem concluded the proceedings at about eleven o'clock.
