A DARING ROBBERY.
A SAFE OPENED WITH EXPLOSIVES. [ONITKD PBBSS ASSOCIATION.] Auckland, September 20. Another safe robbery, by means of explosives, this time at an early houi, at the offices of J. H. M. Carpenter, coal merchant, Newmarket, has occurred. The burglars had tried the front door, and failed, and got m by a window. The safe was blown to pieces and the inside of the building was wrecked. The contents of the safe, £12 m ca3h, and £200 m cheques, were placed m two small Cdsh boxes, which subsequently were found over the Maukau road, m the direction of Parnell, burst open and rifled. The cheques were mostly strewed about the floor of the office and in ' the yard; these the robbers were apparently afraid to take with them. The explosion appears to have been heard by several residents on the opposite side of the street. About the beginning of this week, it appears, some burglars, together with some kegs and and an explosive compound, were found secreted m the cometaiy f and a watch was kept for several nights by the {police, but the burglars who at last turned up to take away the property, managed, it is said, to escape.
