The House resumed at 7.30. TARIFF DEBATE. The resolutions from the Committee of Ways and Means were reported to the House. The Customs and Excise Duties Bill was further considered m Committee. On the item of fruit being reached,the amendment carried early m the proceedings— viz., that between April and November, only a duty of a halfpenny, should be charged on apples and pears evoked another dis cussion. It was suggested to alter the dates to between May and Ncvtmber, but this was ruled out of order. The original resolution was confirmed, by 30 to 29. The motion to reduce preserved milk from 25. per cent to 20 per cent was lost, by 39 to 22. Motions to reduce the duties on pickles and sauces were both lost. Tee, sdperlb. until 31st Decembbr, 1895, and 4d I hereafter. Mr McGowan moved that tea be reduced to 4d, instead of sd. On the division fivepence was struck out by 36 to 22. Mr Earnshaw moved to reduce the duty to threepence. Mr Seddon said it was evident that the last vote meant that the Bouse wanted to make the duty fourpence. If a reduction waa made to threepence the Government would have to refuse to make reductions they had promised m other items, as they could Dot do without revenue. He impressed on the House that the Government could not submit to any weakening of their finance. After a short discussion Mr Button and Mr Allan, as members of the Opposition, said that after the statement of the Premier and Mr Ward they would not assist m weakening the Government finance. Mr McGowan's amendment to make duty fonrpenne was carried by 41 to 19. Mr Collins moved that m addition to the duty of 4d per Ib. an extra duty of one penny per lb. be placed on all tea m pai-kets of 19 lbs weight and under. Mr Ward accepted the amendment, but the Chairman ruled it out of order. Captain Russell moved to reduce patent medicines from 40 per cent to 25 per cent. Lost by 31 to 25.
