THE SWEEP QUESTION.
In replying to a question at hii meeting at Greymouth, Mr Gum ress said he was m favor of permit ting race consultations m the colony so as to put a stop to the stream o: money which nothing could preven' flowing out of the country so lon£ as sweeps are allowed m Australia He is quite right; m his views. I may not be generally known tha Queensland makes a very good thinj out of them. Every ticket taken ou brings ninepence revenue to the Go vernment by means of registratioi and the post office. While sweepi were legal m New South Wales, thi revenue of the post office was ver] largely increased by sweep corres pondence, while to those who got uj the sweeps it meant simply a for tune. It may not be generally known, but it is a fact, that Adams whose name is so well known as i sweep promoter, sold out his proprietary rights m tiie business to t syndicate for £25,000. The amouni of money which New Zealand annually invests m those sweeps is noi accurately known, though it is wel known to be a very large sum.
