These latter acts were known to the law as ' forestalling the market' - still an offence against public trade. The whole are intensely injurious to the public, because a few rich men have the power to raise prices at their own will, and keep legitimate producers out, The statutes enaoted against these mal-practices (5 and 6 Edward VI., o. .14) are only partially repealed (12 George 111. c. 71) ; and were never more requisite to be put m foroe than now."
