RE CHARITABLE AID TO MRS D. O'CONNOR.
TO THE EDITOB.
Sir, — A few days ago Mra D. O'Connor applied to the Charitable Aid Board for relief. It was stated and proved at the meeting, by several members of the Board that she (Mrs O'Connor) was m an independent position ; or, as Mr MoCallum put if, " better off " than some members of the above-mentioned Board. Subsequently the Boari advised Mrs O'Connor to apply personally to the Board for relief. This she certainly does not intend to do, as she is afraid of exposure consequent on such applioation. When Mrs O'Connor became aware of the adverse attitude of the Board's members to her application, she deliberately circulated a false report that we were the instigators of suoh application, and goea one etep further by adding that we wrote the latter to the Board for her. That we wrote the letter is undoubtedly true, but we oopied it off one written f )r her by another tradesman m town ; for what reason a copy was required we do not know, but our copy was presented to the Board. As our office is always open and we aro at all times prepared to assist oqr acquaintances by writing leUrra for them etc, this we did for her, with the result that the roport as above stated is ocmmun with our customers, who are greatly incensed at us being a party to such an unjust demand up)n the funds of the Board. With regard to being the instigators of her application, we oan only say that, knowing the circumstances m which she was placed, we would deem it a gross injustice to assist one who is perhaps able to assist us, but who was strongly advised by a member of the above Board to make the application, — We are, etc. HocMWwoßig Bros.
