DEATH FROM CHLORODYNE.

A MARLBOROUGH SCHOOLMASTER

PABSBD AWAY.

[UNITED PBESS ASSOCIATION.] Auckland, January 22. A saloon passenger on (be Monowai from Sydney to Wellington, named Feuke, was found at 7 o'olock m hia cabin last night by the Chief Steward m a state of coma, and died m a few minute 3. An empty bottle of oblorodyne was found m the cabin and a full one m his pookot, apparently purchased from a looal chemist, Feake oame on board at Sydney apparently suffering fron the effeots of drink, and refused to drink on the passage He went ashore early thi9 morning and returned at 9 a.m. and went to his oabin, where he had been all day till he was found by the Chief Steward. *s*

We regret to have to say that there is very little room left for doubt as to the identity of the Mr Peake mentioned as having died on the Monowai (from an overdose of chlorodyne) with Mr Peake, the respeoted traoher of tbe State school at Tua Marina. Mr Peake left Bleaheim a short time ago, to spend the cchool holidays m Sydney, taking a return tioket m Wellington. The sohools reopen, after the summer vaoation. on next Monday, and he was expeoted to return by this tiip of the Monowai, so that it is only too evident that tbe ill fated passenger is tbe Mr Peake of Tua Marina. We learned from Mr Peake himself, on one ocoasion, that he sometimes took chlorodyne to counteract insomnia, bo that it is quite probable that he may have been unfortunate enough to make a mistake m tbe quantity. Mrs Peake is at present staying m Nelson, and will have tbe hearty sympathy of all. Mr S. Hodson, who has just returned to Blenheim from Sydney, caw Mr Peake and spoke to him m the latter place, and thinks it very probable that he started back by the Monowai, which was to follow tbe Talune (the boat m which Hodson travelled) m a few days. Mr Peake has been m the district for many years, and has been oonneoted with the Tua Marina School a considerable time. Some suspense will be felt till the too probable surmise is verified or falsified. y
