Girling, of the H*U of Commerce, had rather an unpleasant experience this morning while on a journey from Blenheim to Havalock. Entering the Wairau river, the right ford was not pioked up, and as a consequence the trap, laden with draper?, eto, got into a hole and capsized. Mr Gi ling made his way to the bank on the Benwiok side, bot the horse and vehicle waa carried about a quarter of a mile down the Btream, eventually landing on the other side of the river. The shaft of the trap was broken, and Mr Girling was also unfortunate m losing about £20 worth of stuff. It i? a gross scandal that something is not done to propsrly fUg out the fords m this river. Tha river was low this morning, and hid the ford b«en flagged no difficulty would have been experienced by Mr Girling m crossing. Almost every day someone or other comes to grief from this cause, and it is a wonder a serious drowning acoident has not, before, this eventuated. Steps should be immediately taken to protect the lives and property of travellers.
