♦ A BRITISH PROTECTORATE REQUESTED. [UNITED PBESS ASBOOIATIOH.] Auckland, Auguat If. The Saraoan Times of the last date to hand says : — Hia Majesty King Walietoa paid a visit to H. M.S. Orlando. He was accompanied by the whole of the Faipule, and we understand a joint request was made by them to the Admiral that a British protectorate should be declared over Samoa. The Samoan Herald says : The natives of both parties are busily engaged m robbery. From all parts of Upolu reports daily arrive of the unbearable conduct of the natives The war has baen the cause of preventing the piloting of food plants, so that the natives are obliged to steal al.noot everything they require to eat. An outbreak of another war is feared on the island of Tutuila, where the natives are up m arms, and light skirmishes have taken plnce. The Herald <f the 4th inst. records a cold-blooded murder perpetrated about three weeks previously It seems some time last ye»r a row took plaoe between S <lapia and Nono, two heads of families. A fight resulted, m which Nono's brother w*s struck with an axe, and he died soon afterwards. Salapia had one brother nam»d Taito, a deacon of the church — altogether a very peaceable man. While his brother was at prayers one evening, a relative of the man who had b3en struck with the axe put a gun .through a hole m the wall of Taito'a house, and , shot him through the chest. Taito died a week afterwards.
