» Sbvkbaii important reforms and alterations are, we learn from Wellington, on the tapis m oonnaotieti with the working of the New Zealand Telegrapbia Department. Among the most consequential will be the laying of a single core cable across Cook Strait, an order for the construction of which has already been sent Home. The Hinemoa on her return from Raratonga will inrvey a suitable route m connection with the cable. A Whtatstona automatic sender and receiver has been ordered, by whioh messages ein bs despatohed at a speed of about ioj ■■: nds a minute. It has also been decided to place Dunedia and Wollingtou m direot telegraphic communication. Mr Orchiaton, Inspector of Telegraphs, Auckland, fills the vacancy m Dunedin caused by Mr Logan's promotion, and Mr Bold, ef Napier, succeeds Mr Orcbiston. The Auckland district will take m part of Hawke's Bay, the remainder of the latter being admiaistered from Wellington. A resident officer will be stationed at Napier, and officers m charga m tbe four centres have been asked to qualify them* selves for the position of inspectors m view of filling future vaoancies. Mr Gannaway, of the Nelson office, will m all probability be removed to Blenheim, whioh ia a more central station.
