MURDER OF MISSION ARIES IN CHINA.
■» The Taiyaan, which arrived at Sydney on July SO, brings Hongkong dates to the 13th of that month A terrible affair took place on the 3rd. when two Swedish missionaries —Rev. O. F. Wikbohn and the Rev. A. D. Johanson— were murdered by a fanatical mob. They were the only Protestant missionaries residing at Sungpu. They belonged to ths Swedish Missionary Society. Adverse comment has been made m Hankow OQ what is described k« the reckless enthusiasm of those responsible for sending anproteeted and inexperienced young men and simple young women totally unfitted for the work, and often not understanding a word of the language, amongst a fanatical and semi civilised mob. Tn the case of these two men whose lives were taken, they ha ' be&n but a year or two m Cbina, but were sent right into the heart of the empiie and into one of the most dangerous districts. A mob, alter chasing them over the roofs of many dwellings, overtook the victims, Bprang upon them, and first stabbed them with spiked poles, then battared m their skulla and stripped every vestige of clothing off the bodies. "In mere wanton wickedness, " says the account " they inflicted nameless barbarities on their now dead and senseless bodies, and laft them for dogs to devour."
