The failure of the Australian crioketer« m their first innings is quite inexcusable, as the wicket waß playing very true. la their second innings the Colonials made a much better stand, and have loat only two wickets for 158 runs. Giffen not oat . . . . 49 Trott not out .. ..21 Sundries 11 Total for two wickets . . 158 Banaernaan and Bruce knocked up half a oentury m thirty minutes, the leg hitting of the latter being excellent, bat he was eventually taken m the slips. B&nnerman and Giffen made a fine stand, and frequent changes of bowling were made, even Jackson being tried. The oentnrj was raised m an hoar and a quarter, and at 126 Bannerman, who had played a spirited innings, wai dismisied by Shier at mid-on. He had nine foura among his figures. The fielding of the Englishmen wan excellent. Received August 17, 11.20 a.m. London, August 16. The weather was again hot and sultry, and the wicket somewhat fiery. The second innings of the Australians closed for 349, and thanks to their miserable display on the previous day they were thus beaten by an innings and 43 runs. Giffen was bowled by a Yorker m tbe fourth over. After resuming, Gregory waa finely taken by Shrewsbury at point. In Giffen's score there were one five, fire fours, and four threes. Trott and Graham made a fine stand, both man scoring freely. They put on 106 between them m seventy minutes. Trott punished all the bowlers very severely. He made seventeen fours, and gave only one hard chance. Graham batted m his usual elegant style, and took no liberties, suaoumbing eventually to a beautiful breakback from Briggs. Lyons 1 innings w»b rather Beneational. He lifted one ball over the roof of tbe pavilion, sent tbe nest o a to the roof whioh covered tbe stand, and was beautifully oaught of! a hard low drive from tha next. Tramble and Tamer were bowled by saccessive balls nest over, and McLeod was easily taken at mid-oil. The innings, whioh had lasted foot hoars and a quarter, thus came to an abrupt termination. 23,000 paid admission.
