PRIZES FOR NEW FRUITS
Ik some of the American States large prizes are given by Horticultural Societies for encouraging the production of new fruits, flowers, and vtgetablee. As a sample of the prizes offered, reference may be made to the list of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society. In addition to numerous other awards, special prizes were recently notified as follows :— Fruits : For the best seedling apple and pear, £12 ; for the best seedling hardy grape, £12 ; for the best seedling cherry, £8 ; tor the beat seedling Btrawberry, £6; f->r the best seedling raspberry. £8 ; for the best other seedling fruit. £8. Flowers : For tbe best seedling roie, £10; for the btst. seedling camellia, £10 ; for the btst Azalea inHica, £10 ; for tbe bestjseedling tree proony £10 ; for tbe best ««9dling herbaceous psaony, £10 ; for the best hardy rhododendron, £10 ; ' for the best seedling hardy azalea, £10 ; for the best seedling chrysanthemum, 10 ; for the best seedling single-fl wered, tuberousrooted begonia, £10; for the best other seedling flowering or foiiagi plant, £10 Vegetables: For the ben satdling early potato. £6; for the best aerdling late potato, £6; for the best other sending vegetable, £6. These amounts are worthy of the name of prz-8, and should cacne considerable competition. Added toge'her, ths figures come to an aggregate amouot of £172, offered for not quite a score of new productions.
