♦ — The Dunedin correspondent of a Southern paper writes: — W. J. Burk, the longdistance runner, has lowered the record m tiie three-mila handicap. Before retiring he had decided on making a supreme effort to eel-pse all previous records and leave some thing behind him that would m the language of the sporting w rid " take rotne baating." He turned up on the Carisbrook ground on Wednesday evening with only Hislop ss a competitor But the latter after covering about two mileß or thereabouts, left the track compl <ini.»g of a severe at'tch m. bis Bide. Burk, however kept on at his work gamely, amid tha plaadtts and encouragement of his friends and all true sports generally, and finished hia three mile?, m 15min 27sec. Thi3 reduced the recrd for the colony by 13 1 sscc ; the previous record betDg 15min 40 2 ssec. Burk may now retire with honour from the track. He ha 3 always been a tough'un with any amount of go m him, but this last achievement stamps him as New Zealand's premier runner.
