CHAMPION CHESS CONGRESS.

[UNITED PBEBS ASSOCIATION.] Christchubch, December 27. The New Zealand Champion Chess Congress opened this morning. It was arranged that the Club matts should not meet m tha final round. The draw for the first round resulted as follows : — Eyre, Canterbury, played Hookham, Canterbury ; Milner, Canterbury, played Wood, Canterbury ; Cleland, Dunedin, played Seideberg, Duaedin ; Barnes, Wellington, played Tait, Wellington; Jowitt, Auckland, played Sextoo, Manawstu ; At the 5.30 adjournment Barnes had beaten Tait, and Wood had beaten Milner. Hookham had a piece to the good, and m a winning position. The games between Oleland and Siedeberg, and Jowitt and Sexton appeared fairly even. After dinner Cleland and Siedeb9ig agreed to draw, and Sexton won from Jowitt and Eyre resigned. December 28. The second round of the Champion Ches3 Congress was played to-day. Siedeberg beat Jewitt, Cleland beat Tait, and Barnes beat Sexton.
