Bungebah was first favorite. ' The race was a good one, and exciting i throughout. The following was the result : • . G'Naroo .. .. ..1 Forest King . . . . 2 „ .- Clonard . . . . . . 3 CARBINE A DOUBTFUL STARTER FOR THE MELBOURNE CUP. Melbourne, October 15. Hickenbotharn's team was present at Fiemington this morning. Megaphone and 1 Carbine performed half pace work on the ' tan. Carbine was evidently short of work, besides which he moved off the track, after puling up, somewhat dottily. He will not start for the Melbourne Stakes, whilst it ia .extremely doubtful whether he will see the post for the Melbourne Cup. Tantallon looked well, but unfortunately ho collided with the Belgowrie colt, who had just finished a half-mile gallop with Norbert m 53secs.,. both horses falling. The colt escaped unhurt, but when Tantallon gained his feet again he walked stigbtly lame. Reynolds, who was riding the colt, was ' seriously injured by the fall. Muriel, who 1 is much fancied by the Bathurst people, j looks one mass of muscle. " ■ Stromboli and Greygown have been heavily backed for the Melbourne Cup, fully £15,000 being taken about each. 1 October 16. 1 There was some heavy wagering last night, especially on the Melbourne Cup, 100 to 2 still being on offer about various ' horses. ' The money laid about Stromboli and 1 Greygown was from 100 to 3 and 6. Melos ! was also backed at 100 to 6, which was on 1 offer about Oxide.
