BOROUGH COUNCIL.

-♦■ > At the ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council held last night there were present Mia Worship the Mayor (Mr G. Honldsworth), Cra Norgrove, Ching, Bythell, McArtney, Tunnicliffe, and Lees. CORRESPONDENCE. A letter was received from Mr W. Litchfield, again drawing attention, to the condition of the bo-operative drain, the silt having been allowed to accumulate for years. Unless the drain was cleared immediately a large portion of his crops would be rained. If it is cleared at once the damage may not be much; but he would certainly hold the Council responsible for any loss he might sustain. He wished to avoid lawsuits if possible, but this was hi* last appeal. Mr Jenkins, Manager of tba Bank of New Fouth Wales, also called the attention of Council to the same matter. "It was resolved, on the motion of Cr McArtney, to refer these letters to the Works Committee, with instructions to have the clearing out attended to as soon as possible. A letter was received from Messrs Taylor and Oakley stating that sut of the profits from sinking one well Mr Osborne could not bring men and plant back at his own expense. . On the motion of Cr Smale it was resoljed to advertise .for tenders for an artesian well, the contractor, to guarantee an Bft flow; to be advertised m Blenheim, Cbristchurch, and Wellington. . LEAVE OF A33ENCB. On the motion of the Mayor leave of '■** absence was granted to Cr Patchett, and his notice of motion re workmen who may be sued, was postponed till next meeting. Cr Millar's notices of motion lapse 3 owing to his absence. "T ffAB FOOTPATH. Cr Smale'a motion for the extension of the tar footpath from Charles-street to Maxwell Bridge was agreed to. This concluded the business, and the Council then adjourned.
