The Marlborough Express Published Evert Evening. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 15, 1891. THE NEW ELECTORATE.

If the Press Association are correct m their message as to 'the new boundaries, one sensible alteration has been made by the Representation Commissioners m connecnection with the Wairau electorate. The Eaikoura poition of the present electoral dis : trict is struck out, and Picton added to the Wairau seat. The interests of the port of Marlborough are identical with those of the Eurrounding country which supports it, and they will be best conserved by the conjunction of their political interests. • The addition might have been improvad by taking m that portion of the Sounds which deals with Picton, and has m reality no connection with Havelock or the Waimea district generally. There will be considerable inconvenience caused to these outlying settlers if m place of being able to come to Pictan to vete they have to travel all tho way to Havelock. Thi3 might be done,« perhaps, by the Commissioners having representation made to them on tho 16th. The main feature of interest however m this alteration will be the effect it will have on Messrs Buick and Mills, It is not at all likely that Mr Mills would think of contesting the Wairau seat against Mr Buick, while, judging by the boundaries named, the Waimea boundary will extend so far into theJNelson province as to render it even more difficult to get about than the present scattered Waimea-Picton seat, and it will probably make the contest one much mor6 difficult for a candidate hailing from the extreme North of the electorate. With respect to Mr Buick we do not know that the inclusion of Picton~rvill improve his chance?, as Picton is inclined to go Conservative. In respect, however, of the Eaikoura, the loss will be greater than the gain, as there Mr Buick polled largely, and to judge by reports reaching us from that district he had irdproved his position there. The changes have been freely canvassed m town to-day, and the general opinion seems to be that they are m the right direotion, and should have been made long ago. The Wairau seat will be a less expensive one to contest now than it was last election, and that ia no inconsiderabls advantage for constituents and candidates.
