«, [united press association.] Palmerston North, October 13. At the inquest into the recent large fire m the Square the jury returned an open verdict. No evidence could be obtained as to how the fire originated. Christchurch, October 12. Mr R. Cox, M.P. for Clare addressed an audience of about 400 m the Oddfellows' Hall last night on the Irish evictions. The Mayor presided, and a collection on behalf of the evicted tenants realised about £30. He will not deliver further lectures m this Colony. Auckland, October 13. John McDougall Sampson and Robert Davis, who were arrested m company with Edward Downing on a charge of having an illicit still m their possession, were this morning discharged, the Crown Prosecutor stating there was absolutely no evidence against them. Downing was remanded till Tuesday. _, . TnußTj, October 14. xhe Levels Eoad Board today decided to suggest to the Property Tax Commissioner that local bodies, County Councils, or Road .Boards should be consulted m the appointnient of Property Tax Assessors, as they would be able to say whether the applicant's were qualified and suitable. They also decided to send a man round the district to lay poison for birds, and to engage an expenanced English bird netter, to see what he can do. . .
