(ONXTED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Wellikgton, April 27. The Minister for Defence proposes to have sham fights at forts m each town on the Queen's Birthday. Although Mr Coates, counsel for Mrs Heighton, withdrew the charge of manslaughter against Capt. Falconer, Mr Jellicoe who had been acting for hei insists the case shall come on, and there promises to be some confusion when the charge is called on to-morrow. April 28. The Premier denies that the change contemplated m the defence forces are m the direction of crashing volunteers, and states that Government have no intention whatever of dispensing with the services of rifle companies. At the Magistrate's Court this morning, on the case of manslaugter against Captain Falconer being called, Mr Coate3, counsel for the prosecutrix, Mrs Heighton, said he did not intend to offer any evidence, and the case was dismissed. Dunedin, April 27. The Licensing Committee appointed Mr Gourley chairman. Mr Stanford intimated that unless the Bench took steps immediately to close ten of the houses he would resign. The Bench will hold a private meeting to consider the situation. Invbkcargili., April 28. The Council of the Southland Acclimatisation Society last night voted five guineas towards the Canterbury Society's costs to resist the appeal by Maoris, who claim right inder the treaty of Waitangi to fish for trout m stocked rivers.
